Schadau Castle
Geschichte Schloss Schadau

History

Schadau Castle and its surroundings have a history that ranges back to 1348, the first written reference to the House of Schadau. At that time it was still a house, but in 1638 it was rebuilt as a manor house.

In 1838 work began on the landscaped park in the English style. The construction of the new castle building, as we know it today, took place in 1852 under Denis Alfred de Rougemont.

During the construction work, the base area was raised about one meter and then later the manor house and barn were demolished.

The park was first opened to the public on Sundays in 1860, and later daily. In 1871 work on the park (English landscaped garden) was completed. In 1925, the Schadau consortium sold the Castle Park of some 3,6 ha to the city of Thun for CHF 380,000. The city carried out replanting and reconstructions and asphalted the Seestrasse in 1931.

During the war, the castle was used as a military museum and sanitary station. In addition, several vegetable fields were planted in the well-maintained park.

In 1949 the restoration of the Castle Park was started, and the cemetery gardener made numerous changes. In 1961 the Wocher panorama (today Thun-Panorama) to the west of the castle was opened with a new path through the Schadau grove. In 1974 Schadau Castle was placed under protection, but without the park, and the restoration work on the castle building was completed in 1996.

As the chronicle shows, both Schadau Castle as well as the park have changed over and again due to the successive owners. However, some elements have remained, such as the tree garden, the view of the Alps and the spacious meadows. Schadau Castle is an important national monument that was renovated between 1954 and 1996 for more than CHF 20 million.

In October 2017, the castle was closed for urgently renovation work with the aim of sustainably positioning Schadau Castle as a restaurant and hotel with nine guest rooms and unified use from June 2019. The investments amounted to approximately CHF 10 million.
